A message from "Etsy Support" that isn't from Etsy

A message warns your Etsy shop will be suspended unless you verify or scan a code. How to tell real Etsy messages from fakes, using Etsy's own rules.

Who it targetsEtsy sellers
Where it arrivesEtsy Messages, email, text, social media

A real message from Etsy sits in the "From Etsy" inbox with a "From Etsy" badge. Anything claiming to be Etsy that lives in your normal Messages is a scam, and Etsy says to report it and not reply (Etsy Help).

What it looks like

A message arrives from an account with a support-sounding name. It says your shop has a problem: a violation, a frozen payout, a failed verification. It gives you a short deadline, and a way to fix it: scan a QR code, follow a link, reply by email, or send a code that just arrived on your phone.

How to check, in Etsy's words

  • Authentic Etsy messages appear in the From Etsy inbox and carry a "From Etsy" badge below the subject line. The sender's profile shows an "Etsy staff" badge.
  • Etsy "will never ask for your password or other sensitive personal information over Messages".
  • Etsy "doesn't have a phone number to call for customer service", so any support number you are given is not Etsy's.
  • If action has been taken on your shop, it shows as an alert in Shop Manager, not only as a message.
  • A scammer may claim the From Etsy folder "isn't working" to explain the missing badge.

Red flags

  • Urgent threats: "respond immediately or your account will be suspended".
  • A QR code to contact support or verify information.
  • A request to reply by personal email instead of Messages.
  • A generic greeting like "Dear Seller", odd fonts or bolding, or the same message reaching you from different accounts.
  • A link that triggers Etsy's "You're about to leave Etsy" warning, or an address that only looks like Etsy, such as login-etsy.com or etsy.verify (Etsy's own examples of fakes).

What to do

  1. Don't reply, don't scan, don't click. Etsy's advice is that responding can make you a target again.
  2. Report the message from your inbox. Reporting moves it to Spam and stops that member messaging you.
  3. Forward phishing emails, text screenshots or fake phone numbers to ReportPhishing@etsy.com.
  4. If you entered anything, change your Etsy password, turn on two-factor sign-in, and check Shop Manager for real alerts.

Questions people ask

Can Etsy Support message me first?

Yes, but only through the From Etsy inbox with the badge. A support-looking account in your regular Messages is another member pretending.

What if I already scanned the QR code?

Change your Etsy and email passwords from a device you trust, sign out of other sessions, and turn on two-factor sign-in. If you shared payment details, call your bank.
